Anyone can call themselves an “interventionist” when it comes to helping families and addicts get treatment but it pays to have an interventionist who has been trained in the topic and who has experience in the field. Interventionists have a unique knowledge base including medical effects of drug use, different kinds of drug use, addiction treatment and psychology. The training for this can be done using classroom training, mentoring or personal study. The goal is to be able to address the intellectual, emotional, physical, social and spiritual needs of the individual addict and his or her family.
The interventionist must be trained to deal with just about any age group and sociological class. All risks of people are addressed in an intervention and the interventionist must take each group seriously. Good interventionists are certified by the AISCB or the Association of Interventionist Specialists Certification Board. They make sure the interventionist is properly trained and qualified to deal with all kinds of people in interventions.

An interventionist can have a social work or psychology background. The can have an MS in Psychology, a BS in psychology or even a PhD in psychology. Commonly, Master’s degrees in social work lead one to become an interventionist, especially if they have an addiction background themselves.
A good certified interventionist goes by a Code of Ethics as defined by the AISCB and this keeps them on the straight and narrow when it comes to dealing with people with addictions. While interventionist training can come from many different sources in the beginning, in the end they do the right thing by the addict and their family and are ethical in the process.
Interventionists credentialed by the AISCB must have continuing education in order to keep up to date on issues related to addiction. There are always new drugs of abuse out there that need to be understood thoroughly so the interventionist can fully help those addicted to these drugs.
