Human potential is an awesome and amazing thing, but how many of us fail to live up to our true potential? How many long to become more and do more with our lives, our relationships, our businesses than we are presently doing?
Many people have a desire to improve their skills and abilities, but the reality is nothing is going to happen until action is taken to make it happen. Some people seem to be naturally driven to take the steps necessary, but many of us have to make a conscious, purposeful effort to produce positive changes in our lives.

It has often been said that if you hope to arrive at a destination, you have to know ahead of time what that destination is. This is where visualization is very important. When it comes to successfully getting the things you want in life, whether psychological traits, physical possessions or what-have-you, you must first get a crystal clear picture in your mind of what they are.
Once you clearly identify the desired end result, you must then map out a step-by-step plan of action to take you there. It’s like a road map that guides you through the required twists and turns. Depending on the goal, you can sometimes start with the end in mind and work backwards through the steps to map out the path you must follow.
Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence
When you feel good about yourself you also feel empowered to take on the world and face any challenge or obstacle. If your self-esteem and self-confidence are less than optimal, you become hesitant and doubtful, often second-guessing your decisions and questioning the wisdom of your actions. There may be times when this is a good thing, but if it is holding you back and preventing you from moving forward, then it is time to do something positive about it.
An active personal development program including self-improvement books or audio programs may be able to help you overcome low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. It could also be beneficial to join a group like Toastmasters International or other groups where you get opportunities to practice speaking in front of a supportive and sympathetic audience.
Daily Purposeful Action
This is truly where the rubber meets the road. You can visualize all you want, create a plan and build up your confidence, but as stated earlier, if you don’t take action, nothing is going to happen. You will not experience the positive changes or the improved results that you desire. You must make a firm commitment to yourself to take daily, purposeful action to move steadily towards your dreams and goals.
Self-improvement is not hit-and-miss. It requires constant, careful, consistent attention. In fact, it should take priority over other distractions in your life, like excessive television, entertainment or socializing. Yes, you do need those things; balance is important. But if you make self-improvement a top priority, all other things will fall into place, you will achieve more in all areas of your life, and you will be a happier, healthier person for it.
