We have talked about what it means to live life with no regrets and we have discussed obstacle that keeps us from accomplishing our goals and pursing our dreams – fear. Another aspect of living your life with no regrets is realizing that you can’t undo the past. We have all done things in our lives that we wish we could take back.
Many of us have been in relationships and have done things that we are not proud of. I remember being in a relationship with a man I thought I would marry. This man was not what I was use too. He lived by rules of his own. Me, coming from a Christian home, with Christian values and morals, I was not prepared for the things I encountered. I did things that I regret.
It took me a long time to realize that I could no longer live behind my shame and regrets. I had to turn my past regrets into learning experiences. I had to take each past event, look at it carefully and asked myself, “What did you learn from this.” I had to put the pieces of those events into what I call, “the learning tree of no regrets.” Instead of looking at each falling moment as a failure notch in on the headboard of life, take it as a note of what not to do next time.
Like it or not, it is those experiences that make us who we are. It is those very experiences that keep us from moving on with our lives. We have kept those experiences as a negative without finding a way to turn it to a positive.
What did I learn from that bad relationship? I learned to value who I am as a person. I learned to love me for the wonderful person I am. No the relationship was not a good one and I did things that I have regretted, but I am not going to let it stop me from living my life. Getting to that point was not easy, it was a process. The past cannot be undone, but I can change who I am.
My past will not hold me hostage or keep me from living my life to the fullest with no regrets!
