The Seven Wonders of the World

There are Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. The Great Pyramid at Giza (the oldest one) is all that remains with us today.

Far more wonderful are the Seven Original Wonders of the modern world. Of which you and I are number six, and the seventh is Rest.

I choose to write about rest because I feel its value and appreciation has gone unnoticed for quite some time now. The extinction is something mankind has been flirting with for long enough.

The original plan was for the seventh day to be put aside for reflection, contemplation, pondering and unwinding. Not for trying to get caught up with all that’s eluded us through the week.

“Remember the seventh day, and keep it apart.” Is this advice to benefit the Creator? No, it was for the benefit of mankind. Please don’t misunderstand me. I’m not talking about religion; I’m talking about our obvious and indisputable need for mental, emotional, and psychological rest.

I am convinced of the value of rest because I have seen the results of its abandonment. It seems rest is being sacrificed for career advancement, corporate ladders and traffic jams. As a result we are high strung, frantic and short tempered.

Have we forgotten how to rest?

Do we not see it as essential for our mental and emotional well being?

I believe contentment and happiness will elude us until we reclaim the gift of rest.

When rest becomes boredom, we have become addicted to work and have forgotten how to sit and think.

“He that can take rest is greater than he that can take cities.” – Benjamin Franklin
